Jazz Vocalist Kate McGarry Performs at Scullers Jazz Club on Tuesday, April 17


Jazz singer Kate McGarry is celebrating the release of her new CD, Girl Talk, at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 8:00 p.m.  Tickets to the show are $20 and can be purchased online or at the door.

She is joined by her band members from the CD: Keith Ganz on guitar, Gary Versace on keyboards and Clarence Penn on drums. 

On her new album, McGarry pays tribute to the great jazz performers who inspired her throughout her career, including Betty Carter, Anita O'Day, Carmen McCrae, Sheila Jordan and Shirley Horn.

Originally from Hyannis, Cape Cod, McGarry grew up in a musical household and studied jazz at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, studying with Archie Shepp before embarking on a dynamic career.

HarlemWorks Performing at Cultural Center of Cape Cod on Monday, April 16


Jazz musician, composer and producer Gary Foote is bringing his show HarlemWorks to Massachusetts for a performance at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth on Monday, April 16, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets to the show are $18 ($15 for members) and can be reserved by calling 508 394 7100 or at the door.

Foote is a longtime collaborator with Smokey Robinson, Blood, Sweat and Tears and many other great bands.  He is joined by stellar vocalist Jenny Douglas and other HarlemWorks musicians. Checkout this video of HarlemWorks.

Free Jazz Appreciation Day Concert Taking Place in Salem on Saturday, April 14


The Salem Jazz & Soul Festival and the City of Salem have joined forces to present the 3rd annual Jazz Appreciation Day in Salem on Saturday, April 14, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, features jazz musicians from the Salem State College and Salem High School bands, who will play jazz standards.  The event takes place at the community room of the Salem Five Bank, located at 210 Essex Street in downtown Salem. 

In addition to the music, there is a special art display by students at Salem grade schools, based on the theme, What Music Means to Me.  The public is invited to vote for their favorite piece of art; the winners will be announced at the Salem Jazz & Soul Festival on August 18-19, 2012.

Harvard Arts presents Joe Lovano and Greg Osby in Concert at Sanders Theatre on April 14


Saxophone legends Joe Lovano and Greg Osby (pictured) will be performing with the Harvard Jazz Band as part of the program Blue Note Records, Then and Now: It Must Schwing! on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Sanders Theatre in Harvard Square, starting at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets to the show are $15 (less for students and seniors) and can be purchased online or at the theatre.

The concert is part of Harvard's year-long salute to Blue Note Records, one of the premier jazz record companies of all time.

Jazz Trumpeter Ingrid Jensen Featured at Cafe 939 Live Broadcast on April 12


Ingrid Jensen and her quintet perform at The Checkout - Live at Berklee, broadcast live from Berklee's Cafe 939 on Thursday, April 12, 2012, beginning at 8:00 p.m.

The Berklee grad has traveled the world as a premier trumpet player, performing with Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra, Darcy James Argue and Terri Lyne Carrington.  She is a respected band leader and music educator as well.

Guitarist Julian Lage Performs at Club Passim in Harvard Square on April 10-11


Virtuoso guitarist Julian Lage is performing three shows at the famous music venue, Club Passim in Harvard Square, Cambridge, on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 7:00 and 9:30 p.m..   Tickets to the show are $22 and can be purchased online or at the door.

The Julian Lage Group includes Lage, cellist Aristides Rivas, percussionist Tupac Mantilla, bassist Jorge Roeder and saxophonist Dan Blake.  They'll perform from the new album, Gladwell. 

A native of California, Lage is a 2008 graduate of Berklee College of Music.  His first album, Sounding Point, was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2009.

Medfield High School Jazz Band Holds 'Dollars for Duke Fundraiser' on April 7

The Medfield High School Jazz Band has been invited to perform at the 17th annual Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival taking place May 4-6, 2012 at Lincoln Center in New York City.

To help underwrite the $12,000 needed for the trip, the Medfield Music Association is holding a Dollars-for-Duke fundraiser, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2012.

The 'Jazz Around Town' fundraiser features live jazz performances in venues around Medfield, with band members collecting cash and check donations with top hats during and after each performance.  Supporters can also send Dollars for Duke donations of any amount to the Medfield Music Association, P.O. Box 115, Medfield, MA 02052.

The Medfield band is one of only 15 high school bands selected from across the United States and Canada, and the only New England band invited to the prestigious competition, which is judged by Wynton Marsalis and a panel of musical educators and performers.

Jazz vocalist Sunny Wilkinson is performing at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at 8:00 p.m.  She is joined by local saxophone star Grace Kelly.  Tickets to the show are $20 and can be purchased online or at the door. 

Wilkinson has performed with some of the world's best jazz performers, including the Count Basie Band, Clark Terry, Mark Murphy and others.  She has also performed on the popular TV show, Saved by the Bell and was a Solid Gold Singer.    Kelly is an acclaimed young saxophonist who has also branched out as a vocalist, composer, lyricist and arranger.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History marks the 11th annual Jazz Appreciation Month in April with a month long celebration of jazz featuring performances, talks, tours and family-oriented events in venues around Washington, D.C.

Jazz Singer Gian Faraone Performs at BOND Lounge at Langham Boston Hotel on April 4


Jazz singer Gian Faraone is performing at BOND Lounge at Boston's Langham Hotel on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Raised in an Italian household in Venezuela, Faraone is forging a unique new sound influenced from a range of artists, from Pavarotti to Sinatra.
