Gladys Knight Headlines Steppin Out for the Dimock Center in Boston on Saturday, October 20


An all-star cast of musicians, including Gladys Knight, Elan Trotman, Shea Rose, Take 6, Orquesta Aragon are supporting the 25th Steppin Outfor the Dimock Center, taking place at The Westin Copley Place Hotel on Saturday, October 20, 2012.

The annual event provides direct financial support for the Dimock Center’s mission to deliver quality health care, behavioral health services and family support programs for underserved neighborhoods in Boston.

NEC Pays Tribute to Trombone Legend Bob Brookmeyer at Jordan Hall in Boston on October 18


The New England Conservatory is presenting the Bob Brookmeyer Memorial Concert at Jordan Hall in Boston at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2012, in honor of the legendary jazz trombonist and educator who passed away in December 2011.

The concert is free and open to the public. 

Brookmeyer taught at NEC from 1997 to 2007 and created the NEC Jazz Composers Workshop.  Read testimonials on Brookmeyer from students and faculty at NEC.

California Jazz Trio & Montreal Jazz Trio Perform in Rockport on Saturday, October 13


Six world class jazz guitar virtuosos - the California Jazz Trio and the Montreal Jazz Trio, are performing a concert at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport on Saturday, October, 13, 2012 at 8:00 p.m.

Holyoke Latin Jazz Festival Takes Place in Western Mass on Saturday, October 13

The first annual Holyoke  Latin Jazz Festival is taking place on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at the Winter Palace Theatre in Holyoke from 4:00 p.m. to midnight. 

The line-up includes a number of great Latin jazz bands from the Pioneer Valley and New York City, including Los InterTrips, Wayne Roberts Latin Jazz Quintet, Jesus Pagan and Conjunto Barrio, Ed Byrne’s Latin Jazz Evolution and DJ Wichy. 

The festival is part of the PassportHolyoke Discover Holyoke Day, a celebration of art, music and dance performances, demonstrations and workshops, historic tours of Holyoke and historic buildings, a locomotive train, the Merry-Go-Round, several museums in downtown Holyoke.  

Admission is just $1 for a wristband that gives you access to all of these activities.

Daniel Bennett Jazz Group Performs at Liberty Hotel in Boston on Wednesday, October 10

A graduate of Boston's New England Conservatory,  Daniel Bennett is an accomplished jazz performer who pioneered a new brand of experimental folk jazz.

Located at 215 Charles Street in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood, Liberty Hotel is described one of the city's most spectacular hotels and architectural gems.

Acclaimed sax player Donny McCaslin is celebrating the release of his 10th CD with a concert at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, starting at 8:00 p.m.

McCaslin is joined in his group by Tim Lefebvre, Mark Guiliana and Jason Lindner.

Newton Jazz & Wine Festival Re-Scheduled for Saturday October 13



The Newton Jazz & Wine Festival is wrapping up this year's festivities with a Jazz-in-the-Yard concert at the Jackson Homestead in Newton on Saturday, October 13, 2012 with a free concert from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.  The concert, originally scheduled for September 30, was postponed due to weather.

Live performers include Cruzamente, an all-women Cape Verdean band, Fred Woodward Trio, Rusty Scott Trio, and Persian Blue.  Here are directions to the Jackson Homestead.

Quartango, a sophisticated ensemble that weaves jazz and classical music into tango, is on stage at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at 5:00 p.m.

Quartango is comprised of Stephane Aubin on piano, Jonathan Goldman on bandoneon, René Gosselin on double bass, Chantal Simard on percussion, and Antoine Bareil on violin.

Pianist/Composer Robert Glasper Discusses Creativity at Harvard on Wednesday, October 3


Robert Glasper, a Grammy-nominated pianist and composer whose work crosses over into jazz, hip hop and rhythm & blues, is at Harvard University to discuss creativity and to perform, on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 3:00 p.m.

The event takes place at Farkas Hall Studio, 10-12 Holyoke Street in Harvard Square, Cambridge.  Admission is free and open to the public.   It's part of the Learning from Performers Series presented by Office of the Arts at Harvard. The Hip Hop Archives is also a sponsor.

Patrick Douthit, aka 9th Wonder, a record producer, DJ, lecturer and rapper, is moderating the discussion.  Afterwards, Glasper will lead a clinic with Harvard music students.

Aardvark Jazz Orchestra Celebrates 40th Season at Scullers Jazz Club on October 3

The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, hailed as one of the most inventive and accomplished jazz ensembles, is opening its 40th season with a concert at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 8:00 p.m.  Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online or at the venue.

Founded in 1973 by music director and trumpet player Mark Harvey, the orchestra specializes in original exploratory works composed by Harvey, together with wide-ranging repertory including Ellingtonia; American music by such composers as Ives, Gottschalk, and Billings; and performances with film, dance and poetry.
