Jazz Bassist John Patitucci Performs at Regattabar Jazz Club on January 31

Acoustic bassist John Patitucci is the featured performed at a special concert by the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, taking place at the Regattabar Jazz Club in Cambridge on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 7:30 p.m.

Born in New York City, Patitucci has performed with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Pat Metheny, Wynton Marsalis, Astrud and Joao Gilberto, Joao Bosco, Dori Caymmi and Chick Corea.  He has released six solo recordings, and has two Grammy Awards and fifteen Grammy nominations.

Jazz Pianist Jason Moran at New England Conservatory in Boston for lectures and performances, January 30 - February 2


Jazz pianist, composer and scholar Jason Moran is at the New England Conservatory in Boston this week for a series of artist-in-residence engagements with the NEC faculty, students and staff, as well as the general public. 

Monday, January 30, Moran conducts an Entrepreneurial Symposium at Pierce Hall at 1:00 p.m.

Tuesday, January 31, Moran conducts a Solo Piano Master Class at Keller Room at 1:00 p.m.

Wednesday, February 1, Moran conducts a Trio Master Class at Pierce Hall at 1:00 p.m., where he is joined by other members of his trio, bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits.

Thursday, February 2, Moran and his trio introduce the New England premier of In My Mind, which blends music, video and recorded samples for an immersion into the life and art of jazz pianist Thelonious Monk.   The event takes place at NEC's Jordan Hall at 8:00 p.m. Tickets to this event can be purchased online.

Greek and Cuban Jazz Masters Perform at Scullers Jazz Club on Wednesday, January 11


Two masters on their instruments - guitarist Spiros Exaras and pianist Elio Villafranca - are performing together in concert at Scullers Jazz Club in Boston on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online or at the door.

Exaras, from Greece, is a versatile guitarist who studied classical music and composition at Athens Conservatory, before branching out into jazz as well as a variety of movie and theater soundtracks.

Villafranca is from western Cuba and is one of the country's foremost jazz pianists and composers.  In 2010 he was nominated for a Grammy for Best Traditional World Music Album.

(January 10, 2012) -- National Endowment for the Arts is honoring the 2012 Jazz Masters this evening in a ceremony and concert taking place at Lincoln Center in New York City. You can watch a live webcast of the ceremony starting at 7:30 p.m.

Street Sounds: Dialogues with Black Existence, at Hibernian Hall in Roxbury on January 21-22


Street Sounds: Dialogues with Black Existence  is being performed at Hibernian Hall in Dudley Square, Roxbury, on January 21-22, 2012.

Written by Ed Bullins, a pioneer in the Black Arts movement during the Civil Rights era,  Street Sounds was first performed at La Mama Experimental Theater Club in New York in 1970.

Now it has been recast by William Lowe, who has made a selection of the script, so evocative of the 1960s, and interspersed his own original music for jazz ensemble.  Gilbert McCauley is the director.

Ron Della Chiesa, Boston's popular radio host on 89.7 WGBH, is discussing and signing copies of his new book, Radio My Way, at Stellina Restaurant in Watertown on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. 

The 304 page book, which is available for sale at the event, is a collection of profiles of jazz, opera and classical musicians Della Chiesa has interviewed over the past thirty five years, from Dizzy Gillespie and Dave McKenna to Rosemary Clooney and Placido Domingo.
