Jazz Singer Shepley Metcalf Performing at UpStars on the Square in Cambridge, February 8


Jazz vocalist Shepley Metcalf is performing a mellow evening of music and song at UpStairs on the Square, in  Cambridge, on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 8:15 p.m.  There is no cover charge for diners.

Metcalf, whom the Boston Globe called "one of the finest interpreters of the Great American Songbook,"  is joined by Molly Flannery on piano.

Passim's in Harvard Square has Jazz on Super Bowl Sunday, February 5


Not a football fan on Super Bowl Sunday? Fear not. 

Club Passim in Harvard Square, Cambridge, is hosting a unique collaborative performance featuring Grammy-nominated music producer/performer Nicolay and exploratory jazz-trio The Hot at Nights. Together they will perform the music from their recent Shibuya Session EP

The concert takes place on Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets are $13 for members and $15 for non-members, and can be purchased online or at the door.

Listening to Jazz Workshop Features the Music of Monk at Boston Public Library, Dudley Branch, on Saturday, February 4


Jazz trombonist Bill Lowe and pianist John Kordalewski are leading a Listening to Jazz Workshop at the Boston Public Library's Dudley Branch, 65 Warren Street in Roxbury on Saturday, February 4, 2012, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. 

The event is free and open to the public.

The workshop helps participants understand common compositional structures (blues and 32 bar song forms) and demonstrates how an improvised solo relates to the composition being played.  

This session features the work of jazz pianist Thelonious Monk, and focuses on his unique approaches and contributions to the art form.

Massachusetts Celebrates Black History Month Through February


February is Black History Month across the United States, and Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism has compiled a full list of historical attractions as well as cultural and educational activities taking place to celebrate the Bay State's distinct African-American heritage.

Musical celebrations include a concert at Berklee Performance Center on February 7 entitled Modern Impressionism: da Silva, Mahdi and Savage, featuring original music combining many elements of the African diaspora, including gospel, Brazilian, African, bebop, and R&B.

Then on February 22, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library is presenting African Dance with Djembe dell'Arte, accompanied by drumming ensemble Troupe Komee Djosee from Mali, West Africa. The performance features authentic African masks and costumes, folk dances of Mali, and a lively drum circle.
