Jazz Trombonist Conrad Herwig Performs at Medfield Jazz Night on Wednesday, May 30


Grammy-nominated jazz trombonist Conrad Herwig is performing at the Medfield Jazz Night 2012, taking place on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at 7:00 p.m., at the Medfield High School auditorium.

Herwig will join the award-winning Medfield High School Jazz Band, which has performed at several prestigious national competitions, including the Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition in New York City.

Tickets to the concert are $10 for adults, $5 for students, and $12 online.  Tickets can be purchased at the door the night of the concert.

The concert is hosted by the Medfield Music Association, and proceeds  benefit Medfield's music programs.

Jazz Worship at the Old South Church in Boston on Thursday, May 24


The historic Old South Church in Boston's Back Bay is holding a jazz worship service on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at 6:00 p.m.

The service takes place every Thursday evening and is free and open to the public.  The weekly service features the Willie Sordillo Trio, featuring Sodrillo on alto saxophone, Linda Brown-San Martin on piano and voice; and Doug Rich on bass.

The music is a combination of jazzed-up church music and straight jazz reinterpreted to fit the context of the church service.

The Old South Church, created in 1669, is one of the nation's most oldest congregations.  The current church, built in 1875, is a National Historic Landmark building.

Maggie Scott and Be-Bop Guitars Perform at Arsenal Center for the Arts on May 21



Jazz vocalist Maggie Scott is performing with five be-bop guitar players from the Berklee College of Music in a concert at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown on Monday, May 21, 2012 at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $18 general admission and can be purchased online or by calling 617 923-8487.

Scott is considered a trailblazer for female musicians, being one of the first women instructors at Berklee, and the first woman named president of the Boston Musicians Association, Local 9-535.

1st annual New Bedford JazzFest Taking Place in Historic District on Friday, May 18


The first annual New Bedford JazzFest is taking place on Friday, May 18, 2012 from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m. at Customs House Square in New Bedford's historic district. Tickets range from $20-$30 and can be ordered online or by calling 508 993-0772. 

Among the headliners are Gerry Gibbs and the Electric Thrasher Orchestra, playing the music of Miles Davis.   The group features Grammy Award winning trumpet player  Nicholas Payton and saxophonist Dave Liebman, winner of the prestigious 2011 Jazz Masters Award from the NEA.  

Other top performers include the popular SouthCoast Jazz Orchestra, a 17 piece big band orchestra specializing in 1930s music, and the Jim Robitaille Trio, led by jazz guitarist and composer Robitaille.  A number of local venues also have jazz bands booked so the music will continue well into the evening.

The festival is being produced by Your Theatre, Inc, a non-profit community theater group formed in 1946.  Also at the Festival are food and beverage vendors, and exhibits of local artists from Southeastern Massachusetts.

Boston Pops Presents Gershwin Spectacular on May 10-12 at Symphony Hall


The 127th season of the Boston Pops is off to a lively start, with four concerts devoted to the works of American composer George Gershwin from Thursday, May 10 through Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Boston Symphony Hall.  Tickets range from $29-92 and can be purchased online or by calling the box office at 1 888 266-1200.

The Gershwin Spectacular program, conducted by maestro Keith Lockhart,  includes a performance of Rhapsody in Blue featuring pianist MichaelChertock and Promenade: Walking the Dog featuring Pops principal clarinetist Thomas Martin. Other music includes songs from the classic film, An American in Paris, and other Gershwin classics likeI Got Rhythm, Somebody Loves Me, and Embraceable You.

Massachusetts Celebrates Tourism Day at the State House on May 9, as part of National Travel & Tourism Week



Travel and hospitality leaders from across the Commonwealth are gathering at the State House on Beacon Hill in Boston to celebrate Tourism Day in Massachusetts on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  The event is part of National Travel& Tourism Week activities taking place across the United States from May 5-13, 2012.

The State House event includes a showcase of regional food offerings and marketing programs from all 16 designated tourism councils throughout the Commonwealth and features local products, from cider donuts to seafood.  The event is free and open to the public.

"Tourism is rebounding and continues to be one of the Commonwealth’s strongest industries,” said Betsy Wall, executive director of Massachusetts Office of Travel & Tourism (MOTT). “We are optimistic about the future of this sector, which employs 122,000 Massachusetts residents.” 

Tourism is Massachusetts’ third-largest industry and is vital to the Commonwealth’s success and economic recovery, according to MOTT statistics.  In 2010, the tourism industry was responsible for more than 122,000 jobs and direct spending of $15.5 billion, bringing $1 billion in state and local tax revenue to the Commonwealth while paying out $3.5 billion in wages.

Noted New Orleans jazz trumpeter Stanton Davis and his quartet perform at Sambas Restaurant on Route 9 in Framingham  on Sunday, May 6, 2012, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.  Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door.

Davis is a noted composer, performer and educator who has taught at New England Conservatory, Wellesley College and Berklee College of Music.

International Jazz Day is Celebrated Around the World on Monday, April 30


Jazz lovers around the world are celebrating Monday, April 30, 2012 as International Jazz Day, an initiative launched by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The ceremonies kicked off on Friday, April 27 at the UNESCO House in  Paris, France, with jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, who is UNESCO's Good Will Ambassador for jazz around the world. The Berklee Global Jazz Institute performed.

On Monday, April 30, 2012, a Sunrise Concert in New Orleans features Hancock, Terrence Blanchard, Ellis Marsalis, Dianne Reeves and others.  To view the video, click here.

In New York City, there is an afternoon panel discussion at the United Nations from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., entitled Unlearning Intolerance.  Among the panelists are Alexandra Yabrov, manager of Sculler's Jazz Club, jazz saxophonist Grace Kelly and Con Salso radio host and producer Jose Masso.

Lowell Jazz Day Camp Hosts an Open House on Sunday, April 29


The Lowell Jazz Day Camp program is holding an open house for prospective students on Sunday, April 29, 2012 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at The Space, the region's premier recording studio and rehearsal space, located at 150 Western Avenue in Lowell.

The two-week, intensive jazz camp runs this year from July 16-27, 2012, and is headed by Stanley Swann III, well-known jazz drummer and director of the program.  The outstanding faculty lineup includes  Frank Wilkins, piano; Semenya McCord, vocals; Mark Michaels, guitar; Thomas Hebb, bass guitar; Artie Barbato, trumpet, and Paul Combs, saxophone.

Governor Deval Patrick Issues Jazz Month Proclamation in Massachusetts


Governor Deval Patrick declared April 2012 to be Jazz Month in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The proclamation, issued to coincide with the Smithsonian Institute's Jazz Appreciation Month across the nation,  praises the legacy of jazz  as an American art form and the contributions of Massachusetts jazz performers like Chick Corea from Chelsea, Roy Haynes from Roxbury, Phil Woods from Springfield and many others.

And the proclamation points to the 6th annual Jazz Week in greater Boston sponsored each year by JazzBoston, which takes place April 27 through May 6, 2012.

Saxophonist Steve Coleman and Five Elements Perform at UMASS/Amherst on Thursday, April 26


Alto sax player, composer and philosopher Steve Coleman and his band, Five Elements, perform in concert at the Bezanson Recital Hall on the University of Massachusetts at Amherst campus  at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for students and can be purchased online or at the door. 

Born in Chicago in 1956, Colman is an influential figure in jazz circles, especially in the New York City area, where he has made his home since 1978.

The concert is part of the Magic Triangle Series, produced by WMUA-91.1FM and the Fine Arts Center at the University of Massachusetts

Fred Hersch, noted pianist and composer at the New England Conservatory, is giving a free concert on his musical suit for the poem, Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman, at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Jordan Hall in Boston.

With Hersch on piano, the concert showcases vocalists Dominique Eade and Tommy Boyton, along with Andrew Halchak on alto saxophone, clarinet, and bass clarinet; Wyatt Palmer, tenor saxophone; Jake Baldwin, trumpet; Tim Shneier, trombone; Valerie Thompson, cello; Ehud Ettun, bass, and Connor Baker, drums.

Berklee's Rethink Music Conference Takes Place at Hynes Convention Center in Boston on April 22-24




Berklee College of Music is presenting Rethink Music, a gathering of music industry leaders, musicians, academics, and technological pioneers, takes place at the John B. Hynes Conference Center in Boston's Back Bay on April 22-24, 2012.

The hands-on conference, produced by Berklee, "is designed to bring music stakeholders together to discuss business models for the future, examine copyright challenges in the digital era, and analyze technological innovation in music and its distribution. Centered around transforming the music industry, Rethink Music's programming does not just focus on discussing change, but rather making it happen," according to the conference description.
