Duke Ellington Tribute at the Beehive in Boston on Wednesday, May 22


Trumpet player, composer and arranger Greg Hopkins is leading a Duke Ellington tribute at the Beehive Jazz Club in Boston's South End on Wednesday, May 22, 2013. 

The music runs from 8:00 p.m. to midnight.  Dinner is served from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Hopkins is professor of jazz composition at Berklee College of Music.

Jazz Guitarist Freddie Bryant and Kaleidoscope Performing at Regattabar Jazz Club in Harvard Square on May 21


Freddie Bryant, master jazz guitarist, is bringing his New York band, Kaleidoscope to perform at the Regattabar Jazz Club in Harvard Square, Cambridge on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.  Here is more information on the show.

Bryant is an associate professor of guitar at Berklee College of Music.  His band Kaleidoscope includes Paul Lieberman on saxes and flutes, Patrice Blanchard on Bass, and Willard Dyson on drums.

Boston Pops presents Music from the Mad Men Era at Boston Symphony Hall on May 21, 22, 31 and June 1



The Boston Pops, led by conductor Keith Lockhart invoke the sophistication and style of the 1960s with Music from the Mad Men Era, on Tuesday, May 21 and Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Boston Symphony Hall.

Tickets to the show are $22-$92 and can be purchased online.  Music From the Mad Men Era will also run again on May 31 and June 1, 2013.

 The concerts feature stylist Steve Lippia, whom Keith Lockhart has called, "the absolute vocal reincarnation of the Sinatra sound."   Among the songs on the program are Sinatra standards that embody the 1950s and 1960s, including, "Fly Me to the Moon," "Mack the Knife," and "The Best is Yet to Come."

Israeli Jazz Pianist Tamir Hendelman Performing in Rockport on May 11


Internationally renowned jazz pianist and composer Tamir Hendelman and his trio are playing at the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Rockport on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 8:00 p.m.

MassJazz is raffling off a pair of free tickets to the concert.  Here's how to enter.

An Israeli native now based in Los Angeles, Hendelman has performed with Barbara Streisand, Natalie Cole and John Pizzarelli.  His latest album, Destinations, hit number one on the JazzWeek charts.

International Jazz Day is Tuesday, April 30, 2013


Jazz lovers around the world are celebrating International Jazz Day on Tuesday, April 30, 2013, tanks to efforts by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Live concerts are set to take place in Istanbul, Turkey, this year's host city, as well as London, New York and Sydney.  You can follow jazz activities on International Jazz Day Facebook.

Argentinian Sax Legend Gato Barbieri Performing at Regattabar Jazz Club on Saturday, April 27



Gato Barbieri, world-renowned tenor saxophonist from Buenos Aires, Argentina, is performing at Regattabar Jazz Club in Harvard Square on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 10:00 p.m.  (The 7:30 p.m. show is sold out.)

Tickets to the 10:00 p.m. show are $25 and can be purchased online.

Now living in New York City, Barbieri was an early exponent of John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, then blended his jazz influences with Latin American music, creating an explosive cross-genre form that became the forerunner of World Music.  He first gained fame when he did the soundtrack for the movie Last Tango in Paris.

JazzBoston Presents Jazz Week, April 26-May 5, 2013


The 7th annual Jazz Week, organized by JazzBoston, is taking place throughout greater Boston from Friday, April 26, through Sunday, May 5, 2013.

The 10-day event features over 200 jazz events in 90 venues, from jazz clubs and hotel lounges, to college campuses and parks.  A lot of the events are free, including activities at the Boston Public Library in Copley Square and South Station train station.
